Message from the Center for Agro-Ecology Board President

photo of fmr. Maryland Governor Harry R. Hughes Imagine a Maryland without her working landscapes. No fields of corn swaying in the summertime breeze. No roadside stands selling lush, local tomatoes. No verdant, productive forests filling once-scenic vistas.

Scenery wouldn’t be the only thing missing in such a future. We would lose critical habitat for birds and mammals, and natural and agricultural buffers that help keep pollution from our waterways. And we’d be without thousands of businesses, tens of thousands of jobs, and billions of dollars in economic activity.

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc., strives to make Maryland a model for helping working landscapes remain both economically viable and environmentally conscious. Our efforts are immensely aided by a diverse Board of Directors, an Advisory Council drawn from the Governor’s Cabinet Secretaries, and by the dedicated efforts of our Center staff and interested constituencies.

I am very proud of what has been accomplished since 1999 by uniting diverse people and interests behind solutions that are both innovative and sensible. To learn more about our efforts, explore this site or contact Russell Brinsfield at 410.827.6202 or russb2@umd.edu.

Sincerely,

Harry R. Hughes
